Attendance during clinical preceptorship/practicums is critically important for the adequate learning and assessment of student clinical skills. Absence for any reason other than illness requires the approval of the instructor or Dean overseeing the preceptorship/practicum or Dean. Unexcused absence from a clinical or classroom assignment will result in administrative action. See Health Sciences Clinical Absences for important details.
Students will be assigned preceptorships at locations based on 1) College agreements with healthcare facilities regarding placements, 2) proximity to the student’s home address and 3) proximity to the college campus. To the best of our ability, students will be assigned to a location no further than 1 hour from their home or college if at all possible. There may be instances where this will not be possible therefore placement based on proximity to home or college is not guaranteed. The entire cohort of students are taken into consideration when assignments are made. Preceptorship location availability is not in the control of the college as it is determined by the preceptorship location’s ability to take students. It is also determined by the type of patient care offered at the location. All of these considerations play a role in where students are placed for their preceptorship.
Changing your Preceptorship Location
Students will not be allowed to change preceptorship locations once assigned. Exceptions will be considered only for serious issues such as personal safety concerns, harassment, or other substantiated situations that may compromise the learning environment. Approval for changes to location are granted by the dean of the program. An approval to change a preceptorship location is given only once during the preceptorship.
