Students who are at risk of failing to meet the scholastic standards of any course, who are demonstrating they are at risk of failing to meet the academic or clinical standards of a course, who fail to meet the attendance policies for their Medical Assisting and Phlebotomy courses (didactic and lab classes), and who fail to meet the clinical standards of their preceptorship experiences will be placed on written warning.

There are two categories of written Warnings: 1) Academic Warning which is related to the student’s grade, meeting clinical expectations related to passing the clinical course, and co-curricular requirements, and 2) Health Sciences Warning which is specific to the programs within the Health Sciences division. The Health Sciences warning is primarily centered on, (but not limited to) professional behaviors, class/lab and clinical attendance, as well as other associated areas of student performance. Students placed on either warning will be given an action plan with requirements that must be met within the time frame outlined in the plan. When a student fails to meet the requirements of their action plan, disciplinary action (up to and including dismissal from the program) will be taken. Placement on Health Sciences Warning will be noted in the student’s file and may have a detrimental impact on the student’s acceptance into other programs at the college. (See College Wide Student Handbook for more information on Academic Warning).

Procedure:

  1. When a student is placed on written Academic or Health Sciences warning, they are required to meet with their dean (or the dean’s designee) within 3 days of the notification date of being placed on warning
  2. During this meeting, the student’s performance will be reviewed. The student will be given an action plan that requires them to meet certain stipulations as directed by their instructor and/or the Dean of Health Sciences. Failure to meet the requirements of the action plan will result in disciplinary action which may include failure of the course up to dismissal from the program.
  3. The decision regarding the disciplinary action(s) is final

Note: Depending on the reason for the warning and the severity of the issue, students may first receive a verbal warning. If the student does not take the required corrective action following the verbal warning, a general written warning may be issued. Continued failure to comply with the required actions or expectations may result in the student being placed on Health Science Warning Status. Health Science Warnings are considered formal disciplinary actions and are entered into the student’s official academic record.
