Mammography (MAM)

Courses

MAM 300: Patient Care in Mammography

Credits 2
This course will address patient assessment, communication, and education in mammography. Breast examination, taking medical history, identifying risk factors, and effective documentation will be studied in detail. Staging of breast cancer and treatment options will be explored.

MAM 310: Image Production in Mammography

Credits 3
This course will provide an in-depth study of mammography equipment operation and quality assurance. Mammography tube design, radiographic exposure factors, and ancillary equipment will be analyzed to determine their effect on image production. Digital acquisition, display, and informatics in mammography will be included. Quality assurance and the US Mammography Quality Standards Act will be studied.

MAM 315: Mammography Patient Care& Image Production

Credits 3

This course integrates advanced patient-centered care principles with the physics, image production, and quality assurance foundations of mammography. Emphasis is placed on clinical decision-making, regulatory compliance, and image optimization across diverse patient populations. Students analyze patient risk factors, communication strategies, and digital imaging variables to support safe, ethical, and diagnostically accurate mammographic practice within MQSA-regulated environments.

MAM 320: Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology of the Breast

Credits 2
This course will provide an in-depth study of the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the breast. Internal anatomy, external anatomy, histology, and cytology of the breast will be studied. The physiology of the breast will be investigated to include vascular circulation, lymphatic drainage, hormone fluctuation, and lactation. Discussion of benign, malignant, and high-risk conditions and their appearance in mammography will be included.

MAM 325: Mammographic Procedures

Credits 3

This course examines breast anatomy, physiology, and pathology as they relate to mammographic imaging and procedural practice. Students analyze normal and pathological imaging appearances, correlate clinical indications with procedural selection, and evaluate positioning and technique modifications required for diagnostic and interventional mammography.

MAM 330: Mammography Procedures

Credits 3
This course will include Mammographic positioning related to routine screening as well as diagnostic testing of the breasts. Special patient situations such as anatomical deformities, augmentation, and post-surgical alterations of the breast will also be evaluated. Additional interventional and imaging modalities of the breast will be included in this course.

MAM 340: Mammography Clinical Practicum

Credits 6

This practicum provides supervised clinical education in an MQSA-accredited mammography facility. Students apply didactic knowledge in a clinical setting while performing and documenting all ARRT-required mammographic clinical experiences. Clinical learning progresses from observation to supervised participation and culminates in independent performance of mammographic examinations. Students develop professional competence in patient care, image quality assessment, quality control participation, and regulatory compliance, with emphasis on reflective practice, professional communication, and adherence to national standards. Successful completion of the practicum supports eligibility for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists post-primary Mammography examination.
